What is this standard about?

It gives recommendations on the space that should be provided for locating, installing, using and maintaining sanitary appliances in dwellings, places of work or public amenities.

Who is this standard for?

Anyone who is responsible for planning, commissioning, managing, designing or providing toilets, kitchens, utility rooms, bathrooms or showers within dwellings, places of work or public amenities. This will include:

• Architectural design consultants
• Architects
• Plumbers
• Cubicle manufacturers
• House builders
• Building developers
• BIM and CAD element developers
• Housing associations and other multiple home owners

This revised standard provides relevant, up-to-date information from authoritative sources. As such it will give users a competitive advantage over anyone using an inferior code. 

What’s changed since the last update?

Since the original standard was published in 1996 the average size of people in the UK has increased slightly and more information has become available on disabilities. Heightened security requirements have changed the space needed within cubicles in retail, transport and some other applications, and developments in hand drying technology have resulted in dryers with a wide range of dimensions. 

Therefore changes include:

1. Examples and guidance added on visit-able and accessible toilet accommodation for people of various abilities
2. Examples and guidance added on baby changing facilities
3. Increase in the types of hand drying equipment in non-domestic situations
4. Recommendations for the location of colostomy shelves

NOTE: This standard does not cover the needs of all disabled people, for which reference should be made to BS 8300.
