Eurocode 2. Design of concrete structures. Design of fastenings for use in concrete
Also Known As:
What is this standard about?
It is a new Eurocode part developed from a series of older CEN Technical Specifications (CEN/TS 1992-4:1-5) that dealt with individual aspects of concrete fastener design.
This new document brings all these aspects of fastener design together into a single source for design professionals, with the reliability and stability that the creation of a code brings.
Who is this standard for?
- The structural design community, particularly those with a focus on concrete
- Relevant trade bodies and member associations
- Structural/civil engineering consultancy services
Why should you use this standard?
It provides a way to design fastenings (the connection of structural elements and non-structural elements to structural components), which are used to transmit actions to the concrete. This design method uses physical models which are based on a combination of tests and numerical analysis consistent with BS EN 1990:2002, 5.2.
This European standard is intended for safety related applications where the failure of fastenings may result in collapse or partial collapse of the structure, cause risk to human life or lead to significant economic loss. In this context it also covers non-structural elements. It applies to the following type of fasteners:
a) Cast-in fasteners such as headed fasteners, anchor channels with rigid connection (e.g. welded, forged) between anchor and channel
b) Post-installed mechanical fasteners such as expansion fasteners, undercut fasteners and concrete screws
c) Post-installed bonded fasteners and bonded expansion fasteners
NOTE 1: For other types of fasteners, modifications of the design provisions can be necessary.
NOTE 2: BS EN 1992-4 is published in conjunction with a UK National Annex as well as three accompanying Technical Reports (TR):
- CEN/TR 17079:2017 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Redundant non-structural systems
- CEN/TR 17080:2017 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Anchor channels - Supplementary rules
- CEN/TR 17081:2017 Design of fastenings for use in concrete - Plastic design of fastenings with headed and post-installed fasteners
What’s changed since the last update?
This standard consolidates, updates and replaces a series of older CEN Technical Specifications that dealt with individual aspects of fastener design: CEN/TS 1992-4:1-5. The Eurocode is a natural development as the technologies and design of concrete fastenings have turned into best practice and are now appropriate to be codified.
