Standard EN SampleSafety of machinery. Permanent means of access to machinery. Choice of fixed means and general requirements of access
Also Known As:
What is this standard about?
This is Part 1 in a series of four international standards which define general requirements for safe access to machinery. The series applies to both stationary and mobile machinery where a fixed means of access is necessary, but doesn’t apply to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators or other devices designed to lift people between two levels.
Who is this standard for?
It will be used by:
- Machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises)
- Health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance, etc.)
The standard’s use will also affect:
- Machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises)
- Machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs)
- Service providers, e.g. for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises)
- Consumers (where machinery is intended for use by consumers)
Why should you use this standard?
This part of BS EN ISO 14122 gives general requirements for access to stationary machines. It also supplies guidance about the correct choice of means of access when necessary access to the stationary machine is not possible directly from the ground level or from a floor.
It applies to permanent means of access which are a part of a stationary machine and also to non-powered adjustable parts (e.g. foldable, slidable) and movable parts of fixed means of access.
It specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g. working platforms, walkways, ladders) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine.
NOTE: This part of the standard is not applicable to machinery manufactured before the date of its publication. For the significant hazards covered by this part of BS EN ISO 14122, see Clause 4.
What’s changed since the last update?
The 2016 version is a full five-year technical revision of BS EN ISO 14122-1:2001+A1:2010 which has been withdrawn.
