What is BS EN ISO 22081:2021 about?
This new international standard deals with general geometrical specifications and general size specifications that can be used to reduce the number of individual specification indications in technical product documentation (TPD). It replaces a very old and well-used standard: BS EN 22768-2:1993. Reflecting the greater detail and rigour of modern engineering, BS EN ISO 22081:2021 brings geometrical tolerancing and specification into the modern era.
Who is BS EN ISO 22081:2021 for?
It will mainly be used in the aerospace, defence, automotive, rail, nuclear and medical devices sectors, and also by any engineering or manufacturing organization that needs to produce engineering drawings (using 2D manual drawings or 3D CAD-generated models) in their product design and development processes. Specific users will be:
- Mechanical engineers
- Design engineers
- Engineering designers
- Independent design consultancies and design agencies
- Users of the former national standard, BS 308
Why should you use BS EN ISO 22081:2021?
This standard sets out rules for the definition and interpretation of general geometrical specifications and general size specifications defined according to ISO 8015:2011, 5.12. It offers a new, modern approach to general specification that replaces the old, traditional requirements for general tolerances in BS EN 22768-2.
As such it will encourage a move away from traditional, outdated practices and over to a more precise specification and tolerancing regime, helping engineering designers ensure that their products (and designs) are accurately specified and that:
- Functional requirements are properly defined
- Geometrical features influencing the functions are properly specified
- The entire part, i.e. all geometrical features, is completely and unambiguously specified
