Explosive atmospheres. Equipment protection by type of protection "n"

SKU132863434 Published by British Standards Institution BSI Publication Date2019-05-03 Pages CountPages40

What is this standard about?

This standard is about equipment for use in explosive atmospheres. Specifically it looks at requirements for Group II electrical equipment of protection type ‘n’.

Who is this standard for?

It’s relevant across all potentially explosive atmosphere markets, particularly those involved in the manufacture, construction, testing and marking for Group II electrical equipment in the following areas:

  • Manufacturers of electrical equipment for use in Ex atmospheres
  • Testing houses
  • Electrical engineers
  • Chemical plants
  • Gas works/distributors
  • Offshore rigs

Why should you use this standard?

This part of IEC 60079 specifies requirements for the construction, testing and marking of Group II electrical equipment with type of protection “n”. This includes:

  • Sealed devices “nC”
  • Hermetically sealed devices “nC”
  • Non-incendive components “nC”
  • Restricted breathing enclosures “nR” intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres

It applies to electrical equipment where the rated input voltage does not exceed 15 kV r.m.s. AC or DC. including where the internal working voltages of the Ex product exceeds 15 kV, for example starters for HID luminaires.

What’s changed since the last update?

This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition, published in 2010, and benefits from a full technical revision. A large number of major and minor technical changes and extensions include:

  • Updating the scope to allow equipment with internal working voltages over 15 kV such as starters for HID luminaires
  • Removing minimum degree of protection requirements; clearance, creepage and separation requirements; determination of working voltage; conformal coating; CTI requirement; insulation between conductive parts and measurement of creepage and clearance requirements
  • Removing general supplementary requirements for equipment producing arcs, sparks or hot surfaces
  • Extending the requirements for sealed devices to require more documentation
  • Adding industrial standard compliance and battery requirements
