What is this standard about?

It gives guidance on the general dimensions and tolerances of precision hexagon bolts, screws and nuts with ISO metric threads in diameters from 1.6mm to 68mm. It also specifies and addresses mechanical properties of carbon or alloy steel bolts, screws and nuts, which are to be used for special applications.

NOTE 1: For the convenience of users requiring larger sizes, further information in relation to the derivation of tolerances is provided in an appendix. Mechanical properties are given in respect of carbon and alloy steel bolts, screws and nuts, but the dimensional requirements apply also to non-ferrous and stainless-steel bolts, screws and nuts.

NOTE 2: This British Standard should be read in conjunction with BS EN ISO 898-1 as it contains tables that reflect up-t-date best practice for mechanical properties of bolts.
