Standard EN SampleSpecification and qualification of welding procedures for metallic materials. Welding procedure test. Arc and gas welding of steels and arc welding of nickel and nickel alloys
Also Known As:
What is this standard about?
BS EN ISO 15614 provides preliminary welding procedure tests designed to ensure that a given weld will perform as required. This part covers arc and gas welding of steels and arc welding of nickel and nickel alloys. It defines how the welding procedure test should be conducted and the range of acceptable results.
Who is this standard for?
Fabrication and manufacturing industries, especially those with critical safety requirements, which includes:
- Structural engineering
- Oil and gas
- Energy
- Nuclear
- Pressure vessels and equipment
- Chemical plant
- Shipbuilding
Why should you use this standard?
Because it applies to production welding, repair welding and build-up welding and specifies how a preliminary welding procedure specification is qualified by welding procedure tests. The main purpose is to demonstrate that the joining process proposed for construction is capable of producing joints having the required mechanical properties for the intended application.
Importantly, the standard provides two levels of test so that it has a wide range of applications. Level 2 testing is much more extensive than Level 1 and the range of acceptable results is narrower. Procedure tests carried out to level 2 automatically qualify for level 1 requirements, but not vice-versa.
This document applies to the arc and gas welding of steels in all product forms and the arc welding of nickel and nickel alloys in all product forms. Arc and gas welding are covered by the following processes in accordance with BS EN ISO 4063.
- 111 — manual metal arc welding (metal-arc welding with covered electrode)
- 114 — self-shielded tubular-cored arc welding
- 12 — submerged arc welding
- 13 — gas-shielded metal arc welding
- 14 — gas-shielded arc welding with non-consumable electrode
- 15 — plasma arc welding
- 311 — oxy-acetylene welding
The principles of this document may be applied to other fusion welding processes.
This standard also enables pressure vessel and pressure equipment manufacturers to conform to the essential requirements of Directive 2014/68/EU (PED) on pressure equipment and Directive 2014/29/EU (SPVD) on simple pressure vessels.
What’s changed since the last update?
The standard has been amended. The main modification is the deletion of Clauses 8.5.2.3.2 to 8.5.2.3.4 regarding transfer mode.
